On 14th August 2010 I posted my first ever fanfic, a harmless and relatively brief piece of John/Sherlock preslash, to the wrong section of the Sherlock kink meme. And here I am, hundreds of thousands of words and a year later, still not cured of my addiction.

14th August is more notable, however, as the official LJ birthday of Fengirl 88. So here, in honour of the woman who has given us so many Lestrade joys and woes, is a 221B particularly for her (rated 15 for language):

Pardon my French

Lestrade had got overconfident, of course. Once he'd managed to kick smoking, he'd reckoned he should tackle some other bad habits. And Personnel had been complaining again about a 'hostile verbal environment' in his office. Though to Lestrade's way of thinking, if coppers couldn't handle people swearing, they were dickheads.

But he'd agreed that his whole team would clean up their mouths this month. Donovan and DC Climpson weren't doing badly, but he was still a flipping disaster area. He'd tried the obvious dodge, swearing in foreign languages, but thanks to Google Translate, even Personnel had eventually worked out what 'menj a faszba' meant in Hungarian.

And - flipping blooming heck - it was about to get worse. Sherlock had just walked into the office, a smirk on his face even bigger than last night. Last night had been flipping marvelous, with some marvelous flipping, but he'd pay for it now, wouldn't he?

"You left these in 221B," Sherlock announced, waving Lestrade's silk boxers in front of an obviously fascinated Donovan. "I was distracted yesterday, didn't realised you habitually ironed your underwear. The obvious deduction is-"

"Sally, you need to find someone to interview," Lestrade said hastily. "But first, do me a favour, please." He pulled a twenty pound note from his wallet. "Go and put this right away in the swear box."

I do worry sometimes that having these characters in my head prone to bad language is going to result in me becoming more foul-mouthed in real life. It hasn't quite happened yet, but it's been a close-run thing sometimes.

And back in January you were expressing doubts about writing Lestrade... clearly, fengirl88 has been an extremely good influence. I hope there are hundreds of thousands more words to come.

I've got something like 75,000 words being betaed or awaiting betaing at the moment, which is a ridiculously large amount. As well as the cricket fic, there are two substantial Mystrades I've written recently and much, much more slash and femslash to come. Next up should, I hope be my two Summer of Sherlock entries (one Sarah/Molly, one John/Lestrade), but I'm not sure when they're posting those.

flipping marvellous
Happy Anniversary!

here's to lots more of your wonderful Sherlock fics!

thank you VERY much for the 221b which made me fall about laughing. I love the fact that the 15 rating is earned mainly by Actual!HungarianSwearing!Lestrade.

also - DC Climpson? a very happy thought...

*applauds wildly and adds to memories*

Re: flipping marvellous
I feel that DC Kath Climpson is now a permanent part of Lestrade's team, at least in my head canon: she turns up again in one of my forthcoming fics. Just as I have now convinced myself that Mycroft's main cameraman is Sid Paget.

If anyone is keeping track of the Google searches I use researching fics, they are going to be completely baffled: 'hungarian obscenities' brought me this helpful page, for example. And without Google how I would I have been able to provide vaguely plausible references to the symptoms of a hypo, the test career of Greg Chappell and the weather in Switzerland in late March, all of which will feature in forthcoming fics?

Thank you once again for all the Lestrade inspiration you have given me in your year of fic.

Re: G'aww
I hope you get more time to read some Sherlock fic in the next few months. Then we can all gear ourselves up to rewrite Series 2 to our hearts' content.
